Embark on your aviation journey with the Recreational Pilot Licence, the first step that sets you soaring into the skies. This license equips you with the fundamental skills essential for safe aircraft manoeuvring within airport environments.
Privileges of a Recreational Pilot Licence
By the end of your training you’ll be able to:
- Operate the aircraft solo.
- Manage aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 1500kg.
- Conduct flights during daylight hours under visual flight rules.
After your recreational pilot licence training you will, however, be restricted to:
- Accommodating a maximum of one passenger per flight, except when a third individual is a licensed pilot capable of piloting the aircraft.
Where can you fly when training for your Recreational Pilot Licence?

Explore within a 25 nautical mile radius of your departure aerodrome
or -
Train within the designated flight training area of your departure aerodrome
or - Fly between your departure aerodrome and the flight training area
Requirements for obtaining a Recreational Pilot Licence
- Pass a knowledge examination successfully
- Complete the required flight training under the supervision of certified instructors
- Demonstrate proficiency by passing the flight test to get your recreational pilot license
- Fulfill minimum flight hour requirements, including 20 hours of training and 5 hours of solo flight
- Reach the minimum age requirement of 16 years
Flight Training Overview
Each scheduled flight lesson includes a theory session directly before your flight with your Flight Instructor. All practical flight training is supervised. From your very first lesson, you’ll engage in starting up, take-offs, landings, and all the manoeuvres in between. Post-flight, debrief with your instructor to discuss your progress and prepare for the next lesson.
